Why "Salsa Socials" are popular. Night club or SALSA SOCIAL? This can be a difficult choice for a salsa dancer. Depending where you are living, you could possibly have a really tough time choosing which place to go salsa dancing. SALSA SOCIALS though are truly popular. I asked a few of my colleagues in the salsa world why they thought SALSA SOCIALS are popular. Below is a list of their answers (and mine) why SALSA SOCIALS are popular: " There is NO PRESSURE to purchase an alcoholic beverage." " No one is watching the dancers except non-dancers. (There is an exception to this one.)" " Social dance floors are generally better than night clubs." " No irritating lights that you get at a night club. (Salsa dancers don't like flashing lights. You cannot see the hands.)" " The music played at the SALSA SOCIALS are generally better that the ones played at night clubs. Dancers play music for dancers. No REMIXING!" " NO SMOKING at socials. (There are a few night clubs where smoking is not allowed.)" " Pure reason for attending the SALSA SOCIAL is to dance. This results in more dancers to dance with unlike in a night club." " You can enter a SALSA SOCIAL alone without feeling intimidated compared to walking alone into a night club." " Familiarity of the dancers at a SALSA SOCIAL compared to a night club. It has more of a "family" feel. It is almost like going to a family reunion everytime." " It is easier to "socialize" with other dancers, out of town guests and instructors." " You can pick a spot in a corner somewhere in the studio and practice a move or combo." " Best place to practice newly learned combinations." " Have easy access to better dancers to help you with a move or combo." " There is a feeling of safety amongst dancers at a SALSA SOCIAL compared to a night club. Women like this feeling a lot." " There is a sense of "you belong here and are welcome" at a SALSA SOCIAL." " The music isn't played too loud that you must go out side to be able to converse with each other." " You will not see people with drinks standing around on the dance floor compared to a night club." " The notion of who is better, ON1 or ON2 dancers, is almost non-existent." Successful SALSA SOCIALS are generally run by a "dancer" or "dancers" and if there is a DJ, that DJ is a dancers' DJ (if not a dancer himself/herself). Check out the "SOCIALS" in your area. If you experience majority of the items in the list above, you are at a good SALSA SOCIAL. Have fun regardless of your level of dancing. You are there with people that have the same purpose as you - TO DANCE! So DANCE!!!! Enjoy dancing! Author John "salseroblanko" Morey SALSA SPECIALIST www.salseroblanko.net |
